Shomari Figures (AL-02)
Incumbent
Congressman Shomari Figures is an attorney, former Obama administration official, and first-term incumbent representing Alabama's 2nd Congressional District. The son of a civil rights attorney and state senator father — who successfully brought the lawsuit that bankrupted the Ku Klux Klan after the 1981 lynching of Michael Donald — and a state senator mother who still serves in the Alabama Senate, Figures earned his law degree from the University of Alabama before serving in all three branches of the federal government. He worked in the Obama White House as Domestic Director of Presidential Personnel, then as White House Liaison at the Department of Justice, and later as Deputy Chief of Staff and Counselor to Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Figures was elected in 2024 after the Supreme Court ordered Alabama to redraw its congressional maps to create a second majority-Black district. In Congress, he serves on the House Agriculture Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, focused on rural development, nutrition, and infrastructure for Alabama's Black Belt communities. Holding AL-02 is essential to maintaining Democratic representation in the Deep South and to a Democratic House majority in 2026.
