Jonathan Nez (AZ-02)
Red to Blue
Jonathan Nez is a former Navajo Nation President and rural Arizona leader running for Congress in Arizona's 2nd Congressional District. Born and raised in Shonto, Arizona, on his family's ranch without electricity or running water, Nez earned a B.S. in Political Science and a Master of Public Administration from Northern Arizona University before spending decades in public service — as a Navajo Nation Council Delegate, Navajo County Board Supervisor, Vice President of the Navajo Nation, and ultimately its 9th President. As President, he worked to expand water rights, spur economic growth, and protect rural Arizonans' way of life.
In 2024, Nez became the first Indigenous political candidate in Arizona to win a major party nomination for a congressional seat, outperforming the top of the Democratic ticket in AZ-02 by 3.5 points. Incumbent Republican Eli Crane ultimately won with 54.5% to Nez's 45.5%. Nez is running again in 2026, and if elected, would be the first Native American to represent Arizona in Congress. AZ-02 is home to 14 tribes, with Native Americans making up nearly 20% of the population — and flipping it is essential to winning back a Democratic House majority.
