Jake Johnson (MN-01)
Red to Blue
Jake Johnson is a math teacher, father of four, and Democratic nominee running for Congress in Minnesota's 1st Congressional District. Born and raised in Stewartville, Johnson has spent 20 years teaching math in Rochester Public Schools, where he grew up watching classmates rely on SNAP benefits — and where he now sees his students facing the same economic pressures. A first-time candidate, he entered the race in response to federal cuts to education, SNAP, and Medicaid devastating rural southern Minnesota communities.
MN-01 is currently held by Republican incumbent Brad Finstad in a district that spans the southern tier of the state from Rochester to the Iowa border. Johnson won the August 11 Democratic primary and now faces Finstad in the November general election. Flipping MN-01 is essential to winning back a Democratic House majority in 2026.
