Darren Soto (FL-09)

Incumbent

Congressman Darren Soto is an attorney, former state legislator, and five-term incumbent representing Florida's 9th Congressional District. Born to a Puerto Rican father and an Italian-American mother, Soto graduated from Rutgers University and earned his law degree from George Washington University before opening his own practice in Central Florida. He served five years in the Florida House and four in the Florida Senate, where he passed landmark legislation to protect families of fallen firefighters, give victims of sexual assault more time to report their attackers, and allow Dreamers to be admitted to the Florida Bar. He is the first person of Puerto Rican descent elected to represent Florida in Congress.

IIn Congress, Soto serves on both the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Natural Resources Committee, where he has fought to preserve Florida's natural resources, deliver federal disaster relief, and expand access to affordable health care. He was instrumental in granting Temporary Protected Status to Venezuelan refugees and is now leading the fight to restore that designation under the Trump administration. In 2024, Soto defeated a well-financed Republican challenger with 55% of the vote. But after Florida Republicans redrew the congressional map ahead of the 2026 midterms, Darren now faces a dramatically more Republican district. The Cook Political Report rates the FL-09 race as Likely Republican—making Darren one of the most endangered Democratic incumbents in the country and holding his seat critical to winning back the House majority.
